#CaseStudy: Cross Collection

By Nicky Rampley-Clarke

In our regular series, we showcase the most spectacular designs ever to have been created, from furniture classics to cult favourites. Here, we shine the spotlight on the Cross Collection by award-winning British designer Matthew Hilton, whose innovative range of wooden furniture demonstrates his signature minimal yet striking aesthetic.

Including fixed and extending tables, as well as side tables, the collection brings together form and function to spectacular effect. Every piece, whether the Cross Extending Table, Cross Sideboard or Cross Side Table, demonstrates advanced wood-manufacturing techniques and artful craft. Quietly sophisticated, they encapsulate Matthew Hilton’s commitment to create furniture that people can live with, putting the functional needs of customers first over simply aesthetics.

He says: “All of my pieces are loaded with meaning and memory and are very personal to me. Visually, I wanted the Cross Extending Table to have presence – for people to see it and either love it or hate it. When you try to appeal to a lot of people, that often fails.

Discover below what makes this iconic collection so coveted.

#1

The Cross Extending Table is arguably the jewel in the crown of the collection, winning not just the Design Guild Mark in 2008 – an award by The Furniture Makers Company that recognises the highest standards of design by the finest designers in Britain – but the ELLE Decoration for Best in Furniture 2006 and the Homes & Gardens Classic Design Award in 2007.

#2

The distinctive cross-leg base is what defines all of the pieces within the collection – including the Cross Extending Table by combining stylish aesthetics with ample legroom.

#3

With just one smooth and simple pull, the surface of the Cross Extending Table seamlessly expands with two extendable leaves that offer additional seating for up to 14 around the table, making this piece as versatile as it is beautiful. These are cleverly stored in the felt-lined concealed compartment beneath the tabletop when they’re not required.

#4

The entire collection is crafted from solid wood and veneer, all finished with a clear lacquer for a look that will last, while pieces are available in a variety of luxurious stains, from walnut to oak and black.
