NB Design Group were commissioned to create a rural retreat on San Juan Island for a young family to enjoy for generations. An archipelago in the Pacific Northwest, close to neighbouring Canada, San Juan Island is a haven for whale-watching and hiking in wild landscapes. With busy working lives, the Washington-based family sought to create a relaxing weekend hideaway, a place to switch off and enjoy the natural environment with friends.      

 

The architecture of the house highlights the rural location, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing panoramic views of the lake. Whilst a neutral colour palette of soft greys, greens and charcoal black, was chosen to mirror the tones of the landscape. Natural materials further unite the interior and exterior, with a range of solid timbers and stone creating a layering of textures throughout.            

The Profile Chairs by Matthew Hilton, in solid walnut and leather, were paired with a communal dining table, bringing a modern element to the transitional space. Frequently hosting extra guests during weekends, the family called for a collection of high-quality, durable stacking chairs that would stand the test of time. Meanwhile, the Profile Stools in Oak complete the informal dining space beside a generous, granite-topped kitchen island and breakfast bar.
