NB Design Group were commissioned to create a rural retreat on San Juan Island for a young family to enjoy for generations. An archipelago in the Pacific Northwest, close to neighbouring Canada, San Juan Island is a haven for whale-watching and hiking in wild landscapes. With busy working lives, the Washington-based family sought to create a relaxing weekend hideaway, a place to switch off and enjoy the natural environment with friends.

The architecture of the house highlights the rural location, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing panoramic views of the lake. Whilst a neutral colour palette of soft greys, greens and charcoal black, was chosen to mirror the tones of the landscape. Natural materials further unite the interior and exterior, with a range of solid timbers and stone creating a layering of textures throughout.

The Profile Chairs by Matthew Hilton, in solid walnut and leather, were paired with a communal dining table, bringing a modern element to the transitional space. Frequently hosting extra guests during weekends, the family called for a collection of high-quality, durable stacking chairs that would stand the test of time. Meanwhile, the Profile Stools in Oak complete the informal dining space beside a generous, granite-topped kitchen island and breakfast bar.

Seattle based interior design studio, NB Design Group, worked alongside Deforest Architects and the contracting firm Krekow Jennings to realise the project. The Profile Chairs and Stools were supplied by Design Within Reach. Photography by Tim Bies.
